Laughton, John Knox; son of James Laughton, wine merchant, of Liverpool. Born there Apr 23, 1830. Educated for two years, at Mr Forresters, Isle of Man: two years at the Royal Institution, Liverpool under Dr Iliff: and for a furth er year and a half, at Eversden, Cambs, with Rev. J. L. F. Russell. Admitted pensioner, Feb 23, 1848. B.A. 1852 (34th Wrangler): M.A. 1869. F.R.A.S.; F.R.G.S. Naval Instructor, 1853; served in the Baltic, 1854,5; and in the China War, 1856, 9. Mathematical and Naval instructor, R. Naval College, Portsmouth, 1566. Transferred to Gr eenwich, 1873. Lecturer in Meteorology, 1874; and on Naval History, 1876. Retired in 1885, but retained the lecture ship in Naval History. Professor of Modern History in King's College, London, 1885-97. Married (1) 1866, Isabella, daughter of John Carr, of Dunfermline; (2) 1886, Maria Josepha, daughter of Eugenio de Alberti, of Cadiz. Elected Hon. fellow of the college, Nov. 15, 1895.
